What is Naphtha and How is it Traded?

Naphtha is a light petroleum distillate fraction boiling between approximately 30C and 200C. In Asia, it is primarily traded as a petrochemical feedstock for steam crackers producing ethylene and propylene, and as a gasoline blending component. Asia is the world's largest naphtha consuming region, with demand driven by petrochemical complexes in South Korea, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia.

Key Naphtha Grades

Full Range Naphtha (FRN): Boiling range 30200C. Most commonly traded grade, used as steam cracker feedstock. Light Naphtha: Boiling range 3090C. Higher paraffin content, preferred by crackers optimised for ethylene yield. Pyrolysis Gasoline (Pygas): A co-product of steam cracking, high in aromatics, traded as BTX feedstock.

Key Quality Specifications

Density at 15C: 0.6500.720 g/cm3

Paraffins (PONA): min 6570%

Sulphur: max 50100 ppm

ASTM D86 IBP: 3040C min; FBP: 190205C max

Water content: virtually nil

Singapore as Asia's Naphtha Hub

Singapore remains the benchmark pricing centre for Asian naphtha. The Platts MOPJ naphtha assessment is the most widely used reference price for long-term contracts. Singapore also serves as a key blending and storage hub with terminals at Jurong Island.

Bio-Naphtha

HVO co-product bio-naphtha and POME-derived renewable naphtha are gaining traction as drop-in feedstocks for crackers under sustainability mandates. Tetra Commodity Trading is active in both conventional and bio-naphtha sourcing from Korean, Singaporean, and European origins.
